Why a little organizing goes a long way
Most of us have thousands of photos spread across phones, computers, and shoeboxes. Without some organization, the special ones are easy to lose. The goal is not perfection — it is simply being able to find and enjoy the pictures you love.
Sorting the photos on your phone
Both iPhone and Android photo apps let you create albums. Start with a handful, such as one per grandchild, holiday, or year. Tap the heart icon on a photo to add it to your Favorites so the best ones are always one tap away.
- Delete blurry shots and near-duplicates as you go.
- Create a few albums rather than dozens.
- Use the search bar — many apps can find photos by place or subject, like “beach.”
Back up so nothing is lost
Phones can be dropped, lost, or replaced. A backup keeps a second copy of your photos somewhere safe. Most phones offer a built-in cloud backup that copies pictures automatically over Wi-Fi. You can also copy them to a computer or an external hard drive.
A helpful rule of thumb: keep at least two copies of every important photo, stored in two different places.
Bringing old prints into the digital age
Free scanning apps from well-known companies use your phone camera to capture old prints, automatically straighten them, and reduce glare. Work in good daylight, lay photos on a dark, flat surface, and scan a small batch at a time. Once digitized, prints can be shared with relatives across the country in moments.
